All former and current employees of Alcoa of Australia are being followed up in Healthwise: A Study of Work and Health in Employees of Alcoa of Australia.
This is a collaborative project, between Monash University and the University of Western Australia, to determine any excess incidence of cancers, and to monitor respiratory morbidity and causes of mortality in these workers.
The Inception Cohort Study involves the recruitment of new employees starting work with Alcoa of Australia for annual follow up. The study was set up in 1995 to determine if exposures experienced in the mining, refining or smelting of bauxite/alumina affect respiratory symptoms and lung function.
These studies are funded by Alcoa of Australia.
