Survey of attitudes and behaviour 2008

The objective of this study was to monitor safe boater behaviour and attitude towards safety among recreational boat owners and to compare with results from similar surveys conducted in 2006 and 2003.

In addition, it provides baseline information to monitor the effects of the Recreational Skippers Ticket (RST) upon recreational boater attitudes and behaviour toward safety issues.

  • A telephone survey was conducted in February and March 2008 and involved 1002 recreational boaters throughout WA and the response rate was 47.5 per cent.
  • The majority of items included in the questionnaire were similar with the 2006 and 2003 surveys to allow comparison.
  • Items directly related to the RST where developed and included in the survey.

With the introduction of the RST, it will be important to continue to measure and monitor changes in recreational boaters’ attitude and knowledge toward boating safety issues and standards, as well as monitoring changes in behaviour.
