Prostate cancer

Uropath is a pathology laboratory assessing surgical urology specimens with a specific research interest in the area of prostate cancer.

The research subsidiary Tissuegen has developed a database of surgical radical prostatectomy cases using detailed pathology information generated from the specimens, along with some pre-operative clinical information provided by the surgeons.

This database consists of over 2400 cases and on many of these cases also includes follow-up information relating to disease outcome including the use of additional treatments and evidence of biochemical relapse as assessed by prostate specific antigen (PSA) measurements.

Associate Professor Rachael Moorin is working with Tissuegen to determine trends in prostate cancer presentation and treatment comparing pathological and clinical characteristics with patient outcomes.

Aims

The project aims to determine specific factors related to poor outcome and provide the urology surgeons with valuable input to modify surgical techniques, such as particular margin locations.

In addition, it is intended that this project will develop a predictive nomogram using local data to assist the local urologists to provide accurate predictions for the outcome of future patients undergoing radical prostatectomy treatment.
