The study aims to identify the financial, emotional and social issues faced by those affected by a catastrophic injury, from the perspective of those who have suffered the injury, their unpaid carers and the organisations that support them.

What is a 'catastrophic injury'?

For the purposes of this study, a catastrophic injury is defined as any traumatic injury resulting in the need for long-term attended care for activities of daily living, such as meal preparation and personal hygiene.

The injuries that are the object of this study include:

  • brain injury
  • spinal chord injury causing paralysis
  • lower or upper limb amputation
The injuries must have been caused by one of the following:
  • a motor vehicle accident
  • a sports or recreation accident
  • an assault

Workplace injuries and injuries resulting from illness or medical interventions or procedures are excluded from this study.

Who can take part in the study?

You are invited to take part in the study if:

  1. You are a person living with a catastrophic injury
  2. You are a family member or friend caring for someone who has a catastrophic injury
  3. You work for an organisation which provides services to people affected by catastrophic injury, including their unpaid carers
  4. You are an independent health professional directly providing services to people affected affected by catastrophic injury, such as a social worker, occupational therapist, psychologist, speech pathologist and the like.

It is not within the scope of this particular study to include paid or professional carers. Therefore, paid or professional carers are excluded from this study.
