A PhD at UWA is a program of independent, supervised research in your chosen field, allowing you to gain world-class research skills and experience.

Course outline

Competition of your PhD requires the development and implementation of a rigorous research plan, based on a comprehensive understanding of the relevant literature and the need for answers to questions posed in that literature or as the result of a new theory. The PhD program involves an independent, supervised research project mutually agreed upon by a student, supervisor, head of school and the Board of the Graduate Research School.

Your assessment is solely on the basis of an externally examined thesis, showing a substantial and original contribution to scholarship, demonstrating mastery of the subject and advancing that field of knowledge. Your final thesis is assessed by three external examiners and must show your ability to document and interpret results, formulate theories and discuss the results in the light of the current literature to a high standard. The PhD program is available in all discipline areas in the University and can also be interdisciplinary.

Admission requirements

Applicants must demonstrate that they have sufficient background and experience in independent supervised research to successfully complete a PhD.
Admission to the PhD program requires the following:

  • Adequate public health knowledge through previous coursework training in public health or professional experience; and
  • Bachelor's degree with at least 2A honours (or equivalent)

Graduates with adequate research preparation, who have previously undertaken work of a high standard or have completed an acceptable preliminary program, may also be considered.

English Language Competence
