Expression of Interest to host a practicum student in 2017

In 2017 we are offering two practicum options.

  1. Public Health Practicum: This 24 point one-semester practicum is offered to Master of Public Health and to Bachelor of Health Science students. Placement will start on 1 August 2017 for 450 hours (students are able to attend 4 or 5 days a week and placement will conclude by 10 November 2017).

  2. Population Health Practicum: This new practicum is offered as an elective to undergraduate Population Health Major students who will be in their third year of university study. The practicum is worth 12 points and students will complete up to 175 hours of placement.  Full-time placement at the agency will occur mid-year (Monday 26 June- Friday 21 July 2017) with up to 35 pre-placement hours completed during March to May. Two days of these pre-placement hours will consist of orientation workshops at UWA and the equivalent of 3 days will be spent at the agency. These pre-placement hours will be negotiated by the agency and the student.  Students can attend for 1 day per week for 3 weeks or 3 consecutive days during the mid-semester study break (17-21 April 2017) depending on availability.

Students are able to undertake projects for your agency, which you may not have had the resources or opportunity to undertake. The aim of these placements is to provide a supportive environment in which students apply their knowledge and skills to a practical setting and gain valuable workplace experience.

The student would require a supervisor for the duration of the practicum, plus office facilities including computer, desk, chair and telephone. The supervisor would be supported in their role by a short training session and ongoing support from a staff member from the School of Population Health. During the placement, the student continues to be covered by the UWA insurance policy. Students are not remunerated for the placement and are marked as pass/fail.

If your organisation is interested in hosting a student please complete the Expression of Interest Form below in as much detail as possible by Friday 10 March 2017 for Population Health Practicum and Friday 21 April 2017 for Public Health Practicum.

If you require any additional information please do not hesitate to contact Sheona Kaschula.
